The Vineyard

Alexander Vineyard is located on free-draining river gravel terraces with some clay-loam areas. It extends to 5 hectares, planted mainly with Pinot Noir and some Merlot and Chardonnay, in high-density rows with low trellising to maximise sunlight interception to the vines. This, together with the gravel soils and the dominant north-westerly winds, ensures low-yielding vines with intensely flavoured fruit.

Almost all vineyard work is undertaken by hand, including pruning and leaf-plucking, to produce the best possible fruit and the vineyard has followed a Bio-Ag programme for over a decade. The vineyard is fully certified under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand as part of our commitment as ‘guardians of the land for future generations’.
